Gateway: Munich
Schladming first came to prominence as an ore-mining center with over 1,500 miners being employed in this industry by the 15th century. The ore mining that first gave the town its independence has of course long been replaced by tourism. The boom in summer holidays at the beginning of the 20th century led to the development of Schladming as a skiing metropolis of international stature - a position we still comfortably hold but are continually striving to improve as we enter the 21st century. Many major events such as the Alpine Ski World Championships, the annual Men's Night Slalom World Cup. The Special Olympics World Winter Games or the World Conference on Music have helped make Schladming what it is - one of the best-known and loved Austrian vacation resorts. Construction of the Schladming Four Mountain Lifts has also made Schladming one of the largest skiing centers in Austria. In spite of all these highlights, Schladming has remained what it always has been - a small mining town with great traditions, friendliness, ambience and its wonderful atmosphere in the midst of the Alps. |
