Val Gardena, with its wide open, sunny vistas and magnificent towering peaks, is one of the most popular and diversified regions for a winter holiday in the Dolomites. Val Gardena is about 13 miles long and runs more or less from west to east from the narrow entrance to the valley at Ponte Gardena up to Passo Gardena and Passo Sella, at the north-east of the "Südtirol" Dolomites. Val Gardena is well connected with the rest of Italy and also with North Europe, thanks to a well equipped train network.

Ortisei is the largest year-round village in Val Gardena. There are all kinds of shops in the main plazza and along winding streets. It is also a woodcarving center with many opportunities to admire the craft. Ortisei is the "capital" of Val Gardena and is characterized from this attractive town center. Moreover you can find modern ski lifts, like the cable-lift Seceda and the cable-lift which connects Ortisei to the Alpe di Siusi.

S. Cristina, between Selva/Gardena and Ortisei, is on an uphill grade along the main valley thoroughfare. S. Cristina in the heart of the valley, is placed at the bounds of the prehistoric "Troi Paian", an old connecting way from the south. From here starts the ski connections for Monte Pana, Col Raiser, Seceda and Ciampinoi.

Selva Gardena, at the east end of the valley, is the most accessible center to the greatest majority of lifts-some leaving right from the village. It has many shops, cafes, a fabulous bakery and hotels along the main street. All 3 villages are linked with a free ski bus and lift network. 2 sport centers in Ortisei and Selva/Gardena offer additional activities. Each village has a number of popular discos and pubs to keep you going all night long. Excursions to Bolzano and Verona are available.

The "Dolomiti Superski Area" has 460 lifts and 758 miles of runs.
Other Winter activities: ice skating stadium, speed skating rink, private and public indoor swimming, indoor tennis, horse drawn sleighs, cinema, back-country skiing with guides, hockey and more!
