MORZINE/PORTES DU SOLEIL

This vast mountain region offers the complete Alps experience, where one can virtually travel on skis from one amazing village to the next. Stay in Morzine, the largest town of Les Portes du Soleil, where there’re a wide variety of restaurants, hotels and shops. Ride a network of lifts to the panoramic Chamossière at 6,006 feet. Then there’s the cable car to Avoriaz, where sleighs and skis replace cars in this amazing mountain top village, which serves as the main link between France and Switzerland.

Claim to fame: Jean Vuarnet, the sunglass king, returned to France with a gold medal from the 1960 Olympics at Squaw Valley and persuaded a big real estate agency to invest in the altitudinous Avoriaz 1800
